| Last week, my history professor was moved to tears as he explained that the point of history is "Who you are worshipping with." This point was the culmination of his lecture on the division of history. We explored division according to race, nation and class. One could easily spend days talking about the possibilities of "our" history by defining and redefining who "our" is. The history of "us", as in us Texans is entirely different from the history of "us" as in us Californians. But who are "we" really? Well, we are Texans, and Californians and rugby players and rope-jumpers, and boys and girls, and Baptists and Presbyterians and jazz fans and rock-n-rollers and so on and on. We take pride in our divisions and we should. I am a proud of my unique Texan heritage, it makes listen to Robert Earl Keen and play poker with my brothers and talk about wierd northwestern people and pretend our region is better than yours...well it is, really it is. This is all well and good. We should take pride and have fun and enjoy that God gave us stories with different characters, paintings with different colors. We should fly our flags with pride and sing our anthems with reverence. Yet, "we" are another people entirely. We are not Texans, or Presbyterians or Americans. We are Saints. We are children of the King. Our fathers are Abraham and Isaac. And our history is glorious. It is history itself. Our story is Jesus the Son who gave His flesh and blood and invites us to feast, American with German, rich with poor, father with daughter, all Saints. I heard tightness and choking in Mr. Schlect's voice as he brought us to the authoritative division, Saints. He apologized for his emotion as I quietly swallowed my own emotion down in the back of the classroom. This sabbath, I will break bread with my nephews Jed and Micah and with my Fathers Isaac and Abraham. History is about "who you are worshipping with." Amen and Amen
